1. Select the correct extinguisher
Identify the fire type and select an extinguisher whose approved rating/medium is suitable for that fire. The label on the onboard extinguisher is the controlling reference.
Never guess. Check the extinguisher label, fire plan/SMS guidance and vessel-specific procedures before use.
Typical media you may encounter
Water, foam, dry chemical powder, CO₂ and other approved media may be carried depending on the vessel and risk. Compatibility must be confirmed from the actual extinguisher label and vessel arrangements.

Pull the pin or remove the safety device, as applicable.

Aim at the base of the fire from a safe distance.

Squeeze the operating handle.

Sweep the nozzle across the base of the fire while maintaining an escape route.

3. When NOT to fight the fire
Do not attempt firefighting if:
• the fire is rapidly growing or beyond your training/equipment
• smoke/heat prevents safe approach
• your escape route could be lost
• the extinguisher is unsuitable
• the vessel's emergency procedure requires immediate withdrawal

Raise the alarm, report the fire, follow the emergency plan and muster instructions.
4. Quick equipment check
☐ Correct extinguisher for the intended hazard.
☐ Pin/seal/security device intact before an emergency.
☐ Hose/nozzle unobstructed and accessible.
☐ Pressure/indicator condition acceptable, where fitted.
☐ Inspection/service status current.
☐ Access is clear and location is correctly marked.

5. After use
Report the use immediately. Do not return a discharged or partly discharged extinguisher to service without following the vessel's replacement/recharging procedure.
